The territories occupied by Russia in eastern and southern Ukraine will participate in the Russian presidential elections in March 2024, the electoral commission announced on Monday, elections in which Vladimir Putin should be re-elected.

The members of the commission adopted the resolution approving this agreement “unanimously,” one of its representatives, Nikolai Bulaiev, told the state press agency Tass.

Russia has already organized several elections in these territories (Zaporiyia, Jershon, Donetsk and Lugansk), which were annexed in September 2022 and which it only partially controls.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated last week that the organization of elections in these regions “violates international law.”

Putin, 71, confirmed on Friday that he will seek re-election in the next elections.

The Russian head of state was first elected president in 2000 and won four presidential elections.

Putin’s new candidacy is possible thanks to a controversial constitutional reform processed in 2020.

Thanks to this amendment, Putin can run in 2024 and if he wins he will be eligible for re-election in 2030, meaning he could remain in power until 2036, when he will be 84 years old.

There is little doubt that he will be re-elected, especially since the opposition has been dismantled.

Almost all of the opponents, such as anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, were imprisoned or left Russia.
