2:43 a.m.: Russian President Vladimir Putin is in a “bad situation,” according to outgoing US President Joe Biden. “Putin is now in a bad situation” and it is important not to give him any “leeway,” Biden told reporters at the White House after announcing new British and US sanctions against Russia’s energy sector on Friday. 12:20 a.m: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj thanked outgoing US President Joe Biden for the new sanctions package against Russia. “It is very important that America now strikes against Russia’s shadow fleet and companies like Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, which are amassing money for (Kremlin leader Vladimir) Putin personally,” Zelensky wrote on his Telegram channel. He said he discussed the details of the sanctions against the Russian energy sector with Biden, but also expressed his condolences about the wildfires in California.
