Samsung Electronics (005930) lost its top spot in global semiconductor sales to Intel last year. The ranking fell to 3rd as it also gave up 2nd place to Nvidia.

According to market research firm Omdia on the 28th, the annual sales of Samsung Electronics’ DS (semiconductor) division last year were estimated at $44.374 billion (about 60 trillion won). This is a sharp decrease of 33.8% compared to the previous year. The decline is nearly four times greater than the average (-8.8%) of the top 20 semiconductor sales companies last year.

Intel also recorded sales of $51.197 billion (about 69 trillion won) last year, down 15.8% from the previous year, but regained first place. Intel has maintained its undisputed first place, but lost first place to Samsung Electronics in 2018 and 2022. Then, last year, Intel beat Samsung Electronics and regained first place.

Thanks to the artificial intelligence (AI) craze, NVIDIA’s sales surged 133.6% last year to $49.161 billion (approximately 66 trillion won), rising to second place, up six places from the previous year (8th place).

Omdia said, “Nvidia became the second-largest semiconductor company after Intel last year due to rapid growth in semiconductor sales,” and “Samsung, which was the industry leader, fell behind in the rankings as memory sales in 2023 fell by nearly half from the 2021 level.” explained.

In addition, Apple, which designs its own chips using ‘Apple Silicon’, ranked 11th in 2022, but ranked 8th last year and entered the top 10.

Memory companies, including Samsung, were particularly hit hard by the semiconductor cold wave. SK Hynix (000660) ranked 6th last year, with sales decreasing 30.6% from the previous year. Micron in the U.S. also fell from 6th to 12th place with sales plummeting by 40.6% during the same period.

Meanwhile, Omdia said in relation to SK Hynix, “NVIDIA is not the only company that has benefited from AI,” and added, “HBM (high bandwidth memory) integrated into GPUs (graphics processing units) to promote AI is also showing strong demand, and SK “Hynix is leading this sector.”

“Despite the overall decline in the memory market last year, the HBM market showed a high growth rate of 127% compared to the previous year based on 1Gb equivalent units,” he said. “This year, HBM will record a higher per-unit growth rate of 150-200%.” expected.
