New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed the probe into a security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab. The court orally directed the central and state governments not to hold an inquiry till Monday. The need for an independent inquiry will be heard on Monday. The State and the Center should forward the travel details of the Prime Minister to the Registrar General of the Punjab and Haryana High Courts. The Supreme Court also asked the Registrar to keep the information secure.

The Union government has told the Supreme Court that the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab was “rare”. It is shameful and extremely dangerous even at the international level. The Center said that the Punjab Home Minister should also look into his involvement in the incident and therefore could not be included in the inquiry committee.

The Punjab government has appointed a committee to probe the incident and is ready to include anyone in the committee. The Prime Minister is everyone. That is why the state is also investigating the security breach. The Punjab government has said it is ready to act as the court deems fit.

The Union Home Ministry and the Punjab government had appointed separate committees to probe the incident where farmers blocked the Prime Minister’s convoy during his visit to Punjab. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s motorcade was stranded on a flyover for about 20 minutes following a road blockade in Ferozepur, Punjab. Modi then canceled the rally and returned to Delhi.
