South Africa condemns auction of key to Nelson Mandela prison cell

by time news

South Africa has condemned the auction of a key to a prison cell where Nelson Mandela was.

Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years in Robben Island.

Britain’s Guernsey’s company plans to auction off the keys to the room he was in next month.

The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture said it was unacceptable to auction the keys without consulting the South African government, which is well aware of South Africa’s painful history and the importance of the keys.

He noted that the key belonged to the South African people and was not someone’s personal belongings.

Mandela’s former prison guard is said to be selling the keys.

Mandela was imprisoned for fighting apartheid in South Africa.

He was the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

He died in 2013.

He was then 95 years old.
