Taean-gun cooperates with related organizations to jointly respond to the closure of thermal power plants. Taean-gun is joining hands with related organizations to prepare countermeasures for the gradual closure of coal-fired power plants within the district.

On the 28th, in a small conference room at the county office, the county held a ‘Capacity of Taean-gun coal power plant workers’ meeting with the attendance of County Governor Gasero, Korea Western Power Co., Ltd. President Park Hyeong-deok, Chungcheongnam-do Employment and Economic Promotion Agency Director Kim Chan-bae, and Korea University of Technology and Education Industry-Academic Cooperation Group Director Min Jun-ki. It was announced that a ‘Strengthened Support Business Agreement’ had been signed.

This agreement is intended to respond to job loss, consumption contraction, and population decline due to the gradual closure of Taean Thermal Power Plant Units 1 to 6, scheduled for 2025 to 2032. The policy is to provide active support, including education, to help them find new employment.

According to the agreement, Taean-gun will carry out △support for reviewing and establishing business plans, △support for connection and cooperation with Chungcheongnam-do and related local governments, and △promotion of the project so that the coal power plant worker capacity building support project can be carried out smoothly. Korea Western Power Co., Ltd. is responsible for surveying the needs of workers at power plant partners, supporting project participation, and analyzing performance.

In addition, the Chungcheongnam-do Job Economic Promotion Agency operates various networks and conferences and manages business performance to strengthen the capabilities of coal power plant workers, and Korea University of Technology and Education helps workers change jobs based on education demand. We will begin developing and operating curriculum for this purpose.

150 million won of the ‘Just Transition Fund’ will be invested in this project to support capacity building of coal-fired power plant workers, and the military will support workers and farmers in regions or industries that may be directly or indirectly harmed in the process of closing coal-fired power plants. The policy is to minimize the burden by protecting small and medium-sized business owners.

County Governor Gasero, who attended the agreement ceremony, said, “In order to actively respond to the population outflow and decrease in tax revenue due to the closure of the Taean Thermal Power Plant, we will hold continuous discussions with related organizations and residents, including holding a plenary session of the ‘Just Energy Transition Public-Private Council’ on the 26th. “We will work with related organizations to ensure that coal-fired power plant workers can be re-employed in Taean through alternative energy projects,” he said.
