A healthy pregnancy ended in tragedy. In the 5th maternity hospital in Minsk, doctors did not perform a caesarean section on the woman in labor on time – the girl suffered severe asphyxia and died the next day. Now her mother has recorded an appeal to Lukashenko with a request to understand the situation and punish the perpetrators.

“I didn’t drink, didn’t smoke, followed all the recommendations of the antenatal clinic, came to the maternity hospital on the appointed day,” says the woman in a video that recently appeared on Instagram.

For 31-year-old Ekaterina Sukhorukova, this was her first pregnancy, and it proceeded without complications. Labor did not begin on its own, so the woman arrived at the maternity hospital on the day that was assigned to her for planned hospitalization – January 15. The gestation period was 41 weeks and 1 day, the fetus was quite large – more than 4 kilograms. However, the woman in labor was told that there were no indications for a caesarean section.

For two days, doctors tried to stimulate the onset of labor with special pills, but it did not work. Then Dmitry Kashitsky, head of the obstetric observation department, suggested that the woman stimulate the labor process with a special gel. She agreed, but soon regretted this decision. Strong contractions (such as occur during the natural process at the very end of childbirth) began almost immediately.

— Around 2:30 pm I was literally lying on the floor. Cardiotocography was recorded with difficulty, about 10 minutes at most. I remember exactly that the baby had tachycardia. I was told that this is normal. Almost until the very end of the birth, the child did not descend into the birth canal. Although they tried to lower the baby, the midwife pressed on my stomach. We still didn’t understand whether the baby eventually sank into the basin or not.

A few hours later, doctors saw green waters. But even at this moment they did not perform a caesarean section on the woman. As night approached, the contractions began to subside and the baby had to be pulled out using a vacuum. The baby didn’t cry.

— The head of the maternity ward, Valery Rutkovsky, said that the tone was good, although the pediatric resuscitator said that there was nothing good. They immediately began to resuscitate the child. The baby managed to open and close her eyes. At 3 o’clock in the morning I was informed of bleeding in my lung. Later there was a cardiac arrest – they managed to restart it. Unfortunately, she did not survive the second cardiac arrest. The child was completely on the machine, requiring 99% oxygen. I have one question: if everything was fine, why such a result? Why was there no revision towards caesarean section? I’m sure the child would be alive.

The woman named her daughter, who lived only a few hours, Vasilisa. The cause of her death was listed as severe asphyxia – in simple terms, the girl was without oxygen for a long time.

In the comments to the video, some women write that they also encountered refusal to perform a caesarean section in Belarusian maternity hospitals, which is why the children had varying degrees of asphyxia. At best, the child then required long-term rehabilitation.

Earlier, an employee of one of the Belarusian maternity hospitals commented to Nasha Niva about a terrible case in Soligorsk, where in a similar situation (doctors did not perform a caesarean section on time) the baby suffered severe asphyxia and ended up in intensive care.

Then the expert said that, in fact, such cases, unfortunately, are not isolated. And the reason for the tragedies sounds cynical and terrible – doctors do not want to spoil the statistics on the number of caesarean sections.

The Ministry of Health of Belarus requires caesarean sections to be performed in no more than 30% of cases (and it is better that this percentage in a health care institution be even lower) – this is a setting at the level of chief medical officers and chief doctors. The interlocutor emphasized: if the percentage significantly exceeds the “norm”, then everyone in the maternity hospital gets it.

State media note that in Europe the rate of cesarean sections reaches 50%, in Latin America even up to 60%, but in Belarus – about 31%.
