It is not so strange that I adopted the Communist faith in the 1930s but I, unlike others, never changed my mind. The statement of Kim Philby, one of the most famous Soviet spies in Great Britain of the last century, one of the five Cambridge Five, as the double agents of the British secret service agency M16 were called who actually worked for the KGB. A charming and polite man, he was so skilled in his double game that he even deceived his three wives, his best friend and politics: he was rewarded – for his apparent anti-communism – by General Franco in Spain, as well as by Queen Elizabeth.
His betrayal was discovered in 1963 when he managed to escape to Moscow, where he died 25 years later. Now the story of him told by the miniseries A spy among us-A loyal friend, faithful to the enemy on Sky and streaming on Now. Created by Alex Cary, producer and screenwriter of Homeland, it stars Guy Pearce as Philby and Damian Lewis, who narrates and plays his friend Nicholas Elliott, also an M16 officer. My best friend is a Soviet spy. Will I be able to believe anyone anymore?, says Elliott after hearing Philby’s confession in Beirut where he was undercover as a reporter for the Observer. Once the confession is signed Elliott arrests Philby but he manages to escape and embark on a Soviet cargo.
Suspicions about Elliott—whether or not he willingly aided his ex-friend’s escape—were cleared up. Elliott was not an accomplice but he was blinded. It was affection that clouded his judgment. He idolized him with that powerful unsolicited, unsexual, uncommunicated adoration which is sometimes encountered among males. Lewis explains again: It was John le Carr, the famous writer, who suggested to Ben Macintyre to write this true story. A current story today: There have been hints of rapprochement over the years that have made the Cold War seem like an ancient story – concludes the actor – but now, with the war in Ukraine, we realize that this is not the case. If tensions are not dealt with in the right way, sooner or later they will come back to bite.
