The Municipal Archive of Torroella de Montgrí enters a digitized copy of the Lluís Pericot photographic collection

The Municipal Archive from Torroella de Montgrí has incorporated a digitized copy of the collection of glass plates by the renowned prehistorian and archaeologist Lluís Pericot (Girona, 1899- Barcelona, ​​1978), closely linked to the municipality, both family and professionallyt. This fund has been deposited since February 3, 2022 in the Baix Empordà County Archives (together with that of the musician and astronomer Salvador Raurich), after the signing of the transfer made on January 13, 2022 by the heirs, the brothers Josep Maria, Lluís, Teresa and Montserrat Fullola Pericot (great-grandchildren and grandchildren respectively). In this donation agreement, the donor expressly wanted the municipal archives of Begur and Torroella de Montgrí to have a digitized copy of the fund.

Lluís Pericot i Garcia was a prestigious Catalan archaeologist and prehistorian, vice-president of the Superior Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) i academic of the Royal Academy of History. His family is originally from Torroella de Montgrí, although he was born in Girona. At various points in his career as an archaeologist and prehistorian, he excavated in the caves of Montgrí, Serinyà, Ullastret and the Iberian town of Castell a Palamós. He was founder and promoter of the Institut d’Estudis Gironins, provincial commissioner of archaeological excavations in Girona and area delegate for Catalonia and the Balearic Islands of the Servicio Nacional de Excavaciones Arqueológicas.

The Lluís Pericot collection consists of 1,021 b/w negatives (960 glass plates, 180 stereoscopic plates and 61 on plastic support) dated between 1922 and 1963. A good part of the images are from L’Estartit and help us to an idea of ​​what the town, the beach and our surroundings were like, before urban development and the tourist boom.

After having carried out the tasks of classification, arrangement, description and digitization at the ACBE, the fund was publicly presented this past Saturday at the Cinema Casino Espai Cultural in Begur, as part of the festival “A Begur Cultura. Theme : astronomy, tribute to Salvador Raurich”. This activity has been organized by the three archives involved: the ACBE, the Municipal Archive of Begur and the Municipal Archive of Torroella de Montgrí with the enthusiastic collaboration of the Fullola Pericot family. The event was attended by the acting Councilor for Culture, Roser Font, and the municipal archivist, Jordi Turró.
