Marina Martínez (geologist), Mónica Roca Aparici (telecommunications engineer), Jennifer García Carrizo (publicist), Estel Blay Carreras (aerospace engineer), Laura González Llamazares (aerospace engineer), Lucía Matamoros (nanotechnologist), Anna Barch Valls (mathematician) , Ariadna Farrés (mathematician) and Helena Arias (mechanical engineer) are the crew members who will travel to the ‘Mars Research Desert Station’, a small corner of the Utah desert (USA) to study what life on Mars would be like.

They all have something in common: a passion for science and space. “All my life I have wanted to be an astronaut. When I was little I said: ‘Mom, I want to be an astronaut’, but due to lack of references at the last moment I said: ‘How scary! I’m going to go into communication’, and I studied public relations. Now I have I’ve seen an opportunity and I want to inspire other girls,” tells us Jennifer, 31, who is dedicated to communication and, as a journalist, will document the experience.

That is one of the objectives of this project, to promote scientific vocations, especially among girls and younger women.

A sector, according to the representatives of Hypatia, very masculinized, “only 11% of the astronauts are female,” says mathematician Anna Bach. “I think it’s a fantastic project to give visibility to women in these scientific roles,” Laura González Llamazares, 29, born in León, tells us.

The crew is led by Commander Ariadna Farrés Basiana (42), a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in the United States, from where she participated in the launch of the ‘James Webb’ telescope. Farrés highlights the importance of being an interdisciplinary and generational team, since “the diversity of careers, specialties and experience means the diversity of women in science.”

The research projects of the new crew have to do with sustainability and the development of Martian solar panels resistant to the dust of the red planet, the development of remote sensing systems of the Earth from space, the design of protocols to collect material samples geology of the Moon to analyze it on Earth, monitoring the behavior of analogous astronauts in a situation of isolation or a project to circularly manage crew waste.

The new ‘Hypatia II’ mission will take place from February 2 to 15, 2025, coinciding with Day 11F, the Day of Women and Girls in Science. Meanwhile, they will hold monthly meetings to advance research projects and work on “minimal and necessary physical preparation to avoid injuries and stay healthy.”
