The ship “San Jose” sank at a depth of about 600 meters and contained gold coins, silver bars and boxes full of precious emerald stones. This treasure is considered one of the greatest ship treasures in the world.

The ship was armed with 64 cannons and carried on board treasures collected from the South American colonies. In 1708 “San Jose” collided with the English fleet and sank after an explosion of the gunpowder warehouse. Only 11 out of about 600 crew members who were on the ship survived.

Watch:

Searches for the ship began over 40 years ago, but its exact location was only discovered in 2015 by the Colombian government. Since then, the site has been declared “political and confidential”. So far, only a few images of the ship’s treasure have been released. Most of them were photographed by marine research teams during research missions conducted in recent years.

The Colombian government intends to start a marine research mission as early as this April, and using an underwater robot the experts will try to find additional findings beyond coins and jewelry, including pottery, wood and shells. The administration even emphasized that the main goal is the preservation of the historical site and not the economic exploitation of the treasury.
