The premiere of the last show of the Symfònica de Cobla i Corda de Catalunya (SCCC) excited a packed Girona Auditorium yesterday evening. The musical project promoted by the Metalquimia Foundation proposes this year a selection of the best Christmas tunes alongside the Polifònica de Puig-reig and the soloists Beth, Elena Gadel, Miki Núñez, Mariona Escoda, La Pau and Joan Garrido, who advance the holidays by a month. Because yesterday, at least between eight and ten in the evening, in the Auditorium, it wasn’t Black Friday but the Christmas holidays had been brought forward by a month. A long final ovation, with the audience standing, after the interpretation of Els Segadors, put an end to a priceless evening whose tickets are also sold out for today’s (7pm) and tomorrow’s (12pm) sessions. Next year, if it sucks, don’t let them tell you.

The Spirit of Christmas, this is the name the concert has been given, hits the nerve from the very beginning. The staging is impactful and the voices of the Puig-reig Polyphonic and the collaborating soloists only emphasize the ensemble. So great Christmas songs from all times and nationalities could be heard on this emotional journey, with the impressive varnish that gives the sound of the SCCC, with arrangements by Francesc Cassú and Adrià Barbosa. The program includes pieces ranging from the medieval music of Greensleeves to the best-known and contemporary rhythms of Ed Sheeran, Elton John, George Michel or Mariah Carey. There was also the premiere of a song, composed by the singer Beth Rodergas and Adrià Barbosa, entitled The Spirit of Christmas. Even more merit for the Súria singer, who has just become a mother again, and as Josep Lagares explained before the concert began, she had taken the baby to the Auditorium.

Especially emotional was the performance of Les dotze van tocant, with Elena Gadel as soloist, and already in the final stretch, when the whole group of singers performed a selection of Christmas carols in Catalan, such as El petit vailet, A Betlem me I want to go, The frozen December, The shielded demon, Smoke, smoke, smoke and Mother’s boy. There was time for encores, with pieces such as Quan somrius, El caganer and Feliz Navidad, enthusiastically followed by the standing and devoted audience.
