Jizan ∙ The Jizan region of Saudi Arabia has many delicious and popular dishes that are unique and different during Ramadan. Most of the dishes are prepared by housewives. So these are among the traditional flavors of Jizan. Despite the wide variety of modern foods and fast foods, ‘Al Mugash’ is considered the staple of Ramadan food in Jizan. As it is in great demand during the holy month, it is rare in Jizan to find a home without this food.

Other Ramadan dishes including mugash, soup, khamir and fish are also specialties of Jizan. ‘Miwa’, a traditional method of cooking Ramadan breakfast, is also popular. Mugash consists of meat, vegetables and onions, cut into small pieces and placed in a stone pot. It is a cylindrical pot made of stone to withstand high temperatures. It is cooked in the oven with water and spices. It is then covered with tinfoil and left for at least two hours before being served. It is available in every house in Jizan.
