For Abdouraouf Gnon-Kondé, UNHCR regional director for West and Central Africa, this field trip allows us to get acquainted with the realities on the ground. “ This visit made it possible to get to grips with the realities on the ground, to better understand the situation and needs of the affected populations, and to inquire about the challenges that UNHCR and its partners are facing in order to better build advocacy in favor of a better response, taking into account real needs on the ground “, he indicated.

According to the High Commissioner in charge of Operations for the UNHCR, Raouf Mazou, the humanitarian situation in Burkina is alarming and worrying. “ The situation is extremely worrying. I saw displaced households made up mainly of women and children sleeping in the open, under trees or in makeshift shelters. Exposed to every risk and danger imaginable “, did he declare.

For him, the crisis in the Sahel, more particularly that of Burkina Faso, is relegated to second place by the international community with the multiplicity of crises in the world. He calls for an urgent humanitarian solution from the international community to relieve the suffering of the populations victims of this unprecedented violence.

The Assistant High Commissioner took advantage of his stay in Burkina Faso to discuss with the transitional authorities, congratulate the government for its efforts to secure the territory and its cooperation with the High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). He called for better protection of civilians and humanitarians.
