Pankaj Mishra, Hamirpur: In a village in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh, the tradition of taking out a wedding procession for the Holi groom has been going on for hundreds of years. This time, due to rural issues, no decision could be taken yet on the preparations for the groom’s wedding procession. The Sarpanch of the village has also given up on organizing this old tradition due to which disappointment is being seen among the people of the village.
The tradition of taking out a Holi groom’s wedding procession has been going on for hundreds of years in Jaria village in Hamirpur district of Bundelkhand. In the village, first the procession of a person is taken out on a horse and then the procession is taken out with great pomp in the entire village. People from the entire village also become wedding guests.
Former village head Ram Swaroop told that on the second day of Holika Dahan, a Holi groom’s procession is taken out in the village. This tradition is very old in which people of the entire village participate. But the present head is not able to take any decision regarding this old tradition. Village Sarpanch representative Arvind Gurudev said that it is difficult to organize the event this time due to hundreds of years old tradition. Told that anarchists create ruckus in the procession of Holi groom. That is why no decision could be taken.
Village women perform aarti for the groom on Holi.
The tradition of taking out the groom’s wedding procession on Holi is also very unique, in which a person from the village is made the groom and makes him sit on a horse. Then its extraction takes place. On the occasion of Holi, the groom goes to every house of the village with a band, where the women perform aarti after tilak of the groom. He is sent off after feeding him Holi sweets. Many people including former village sarpanch Ram Swaroop and Jai Singh told that a dozen horses are included in the groom’s wedding procession on Holi. The procession also starts from the market ground.
Before leaving the wedding procession, the groom bows his head in the temples.
The former Sarpanch of the village told that before taking out the groom’s procession on Holi, the groom goes to all the temples of the village along with Raja Gajebaje, where after worshiping the Gods and Goddesses, he then roams around the village with the procession. Told that the fun of Holi starts in the village only after the wedding procession of the groom takes out. Told that Holi players also dance vigorously behind the groom’s wedding procession. The horses included in the procession also dance to the tune of drums. As soon as the groom’s procession ends, the phase of colors and gulal begins.
Leelas are staged along with the killing of Hiranyakashyap.
Former Sarpanch Ram Swaroop told that in the hundreds of years old tradition, the people of the village take out the groom’s wedding procession on the occasion of Holi in this village and create a blast. Later, the acts of killing Hiranyakashyap are staged. Told that many other pastimes will also be staged in the village, which many people from nearby villages also come to see. Former Sarpanch says that Jariya is the only village where all the people of the village collectively gather at one place and celebrate the festival of Holi. Groups of youth remain ready for security.
