“There is no alarming increase in the number of cases of gastroenteritis and smallpox at this time,” said Vern Nanhoe, acting chief of epidemiology at the Bureau of Public Health (BOG). He reassures society, but notes that there is sometimes an increased number of reports at the beginning of the year.

Nanhoe says that the BOG nevertheless remains alert. He also emphasizes hygiene and preventive measures. Washing hands regularly, preparing and storing food properly, as well as avoiding contact with infected people, are preventive measures to prevent gastroenteritis and smallpox.

The pediatric department of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) has also been contacted. There is no extreme increase noticeable there either.

Nanhoe says the BOG will take appropriate measures to protect public health if necessary. You can still call 178 for reports.
