A hack that shook the RMC/BFM group. The media accounts of the Altice group (BFMTV, RMC, RMC Sport, Estelle Midi, etc.) were hacked on the afternoon of Saturday March 23. Several messages hostile to Russia were published less than 24 hours after the attack which left at least 137 dead in a concert hall in the suburbs of Moscow.

The hack was claimed by the Epsilon group, just a few weeks after making headlines for causing a computer incident by stealing a large amount of personal data from LDLC customers.

In February, the hacker group announced that it had stolen information concerning 1.5 million customers of the brand specializing in the sale of computer equipment. The latter said they wanted to find an arrangement with LDLC before putting the stolen files on sale.

“A communications campaign”

A villainous operation that occurred a few months after the hacking of the French cloud gaming specialist, “Shadow”, already claimed by the Epsilon group. According to experts from the Sekoia threat intelligence platform, cybercriminals set up false promotions and capitalized on the curiosity of “gamers”, by posting messages on X and Discord, to send them to links trapped.

According to the cybersecurity company, Epsilon is one of the malware used in an ongoing campaign since last summer against the French gaming community. Its administrators “carry out a wide range of malicious activities.”

“Before the fall of 2023, we had never heard of them, we had no trace,” Nicolas Arpagian, cybersecurity expert, tells Le Parisien. “By attacking LDLC, they are carrying out an operation to monetize and get paid, whereas in the case of the BFM hack, it is a communication campaign,” he analyzes.

“Tap on everything we find”

After two hacks for financial purposes, the one targeting the Altice group’s media has more of a symbolic significance. “Attacking a media outlet is a sounding board and allows you to show yourself on the competitive market of infostealers (this spyware used to recover confidential data) to make a show of force,” summarizes the vice -president of the firm Headnd Partners.

Very discreet until now, Casquette and ChatNoir, the two creators of Epsilon, responded to requests from Le Parisien this Sunday. “Basically, Epsilon is an infostealer that steals all data when launched. As we were proud of what we had just created, we decided to use it against companies,” explains Casquette, one of the Epsilon Group hackers.

“We don’t really have a goal. Basically we do this for fame (to make ourselves known) and we like to hit everything we find,” continues the man whose voice suggests that he is not yet in his twenties. “A little for the money,” he admits more shyly.

“With BFM, we wanted to advertise our X account and for Epsilon,” summarizes the person who indicates that he is French, without living in an EU country. “Our demand for Palestine is because we would like it to be liberated, even if we know that our message will not be heard,” he concludes.
