INTERVIEW – The research director at the CNRS explains how mathematical functions allow us to understand the performance of athletes.

Amandine Aftalion works on the border between mathematics and physics. The twists and turns of research led her to become interested in sport and how performance could be put into equations. She publishes Why are we leaning in the turns? (CNRS Éditions), a delightful book accessible to all. She also hosts the VideoDiMath popularization channel on YouTube and has drawn from her book an exhibition (1) intended for media libraries, schools, sports clubs, etc.

LE FIGARO. – How, as a mathematician, do you end up writing a book on sport?

Amandine AFTALION. – About ten years ago, I started to take an interest in subjects related to sport, and I notably published an article on the best possible running strategy based on the runner’s physiology.
