New Delhi: As a new wave of Covid-19 sweeps across China, President Xi Jinping (Dec 31, 2022) has expressed concern in his New Year’s message that the country is entering a “new phase” in its approach to combating the pandemic. In a televised speech, Xi Jinping said that China has overcome unprecedented difficulties and challenges in the fight against the coronavirus, and that the country will adopt China’s “optimal” policies when the situation and time require it.

“Since the outbreak of the epidemic, the vast majority of workers and people, especially medical workers and grassroots workers, have bravely faced hardships and fought bravely and persistently,” Xi Jinping said.

“With extraordinary efforts, we have overcome unprecedented difficulties and challenges, which has not been an easy journey for anyone,” Xi Jinping added.

“At present, epidemic prevention and control is entering a new phase, it is still a period of struggle, everyone is working hard and diligently, the dawn is ahead. Let’s work hard, perseverance means victory, unity means victory,” the Chinese president said in a hopeful address to the crowd.

Following a science-based and targeted approach, Xi Jinping said, he has modified the activities related to Covid-19 to protect people’s lives and health.

Xi Jinping, who recently spoke for the second time about the severe coronavirus situation in China, said that everyone is in high spirits.

“The light of hope lies before us. Let us make extra efforts because perseverance and unity will mean success,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said.

China’s sudden shift earlier this month from a “zero-Covid” policy it had maintained for nearly three years led to the unchecked spread of coronavirus infections across the country. This has caused a further drop in economic activity and international concern, with Britain and France beginning to impose restrictions on travelers from China.

As a new wave of Covid-19 infections surges across China, the country’s hospitals and health centers are overflowing. Lines of coffins waiting outside crematoriums have sparked international concern.

As many as 9,000 people in Na may die each day from the virus, according to UK-based health data firm Airfinity, fueling fears.

In the last one month alone, (December 1 to December 31), Airfinity reported that overall deaths in China may have reached 1,00,000 and the number of corona infections totaled 18.6 million, raising concerns.

Indeed, China’s narrow criteria for identifying Covid-19-related deaths and a lax approach, including a tendency to underestimate the true toll of the epidemic, could make it difficult for people to communicate the best ways to protect themselves, health experts have warned.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization on Friday again urged China’s health authorities to regularly share specific and real-time information on the country’s coronavirus situation. The recent surge in infections has raised concerns about the spread of the coronavirus worldwide.
