Znojmo Hospital: Used bone from a living donor to reinforce the fracture

by time news

The hospital first collected it last June, and now in March, it was received for the first time by a patient with a comminuted fracture of the upper part of the tibia with bone defects. “The so-called cancellous bone is used from the head, which is inserted piece by piece into the defect of the injured bone. The advantage is the bone structure of the graft, which serves to reheal the injured bone as a »scaffold« with subsequent rehealing into the standard shape and structure of the bone tissue.” described the head of the orthopedic and trauma department, Martin Komzák.

So it does not mean that one bone literally replaces another, but that the content of the removed bone helps in the damaged bone.

Complex authorization

Femoral heads are removed during total hip replacements. Usually, the removed part of the bones is disposed of as biological waste. In the Czech Republic, only a few workplaces are authorized to remove femoral head tissue from living donors for other purposes, apart from Znojmo, it is, for example, the Brno University Hospital.

Although the whole process seems very simple, obtaining the authorization and all the administration associated with the tissue device cost a lot of effort and work of colleagues. I am proud of the fact that in our hospital, which is the largest medical facility in the South Moravian region, a use has been found for bone tissues that normally end up in the waste, and yet they can be such a benefit for our patients,” said hospital director Martin Pavlík.

Up to 800,000 Czechs suffer from bone thinning.

The hospital has permission from the State Institute for Drug Control to use the heads for its needs. The shelf life is five years from the date of purchase. Last year, the hospital performed 22 samplings, and this year six.

The head must be deep frozen and quarantined for 180 days. Now the device has three pieces of heads to use that have already completed the process.
