A ‘lost site’ reappears with the secrets of the Permian

In 1951, a team of researchers mapping the area discovered an exceptional Permian fossil bed in a remote region of Brazil. As reported then, the unique geological conditions of the place had allowed authentic treasures of incalculable scientific value to be preserved there.

The site, they said, had the potential to shed light on what happened during one of the largest extinction events in Earth’s history. But in 2019, after more than seventy years, a team of Brazilian researchers succeeded where they failed and managed to ‘rediscover’ the missing treasure. And now they are beginning to reap the rewards.
