London Not a single wind farm operator made a bid at the UK government’s annual auction for new offshore wind turbines in the North Sea. The British Department of Energy and Climate Protection announced this on Friday. The lull in investment in wind power is not only a disgrace for the planned expansion of renewable energy sources, but, according to industry experts, it also endangers the British government’s legal goal of making the country climate neutral by 2050.

“This is a catastrophe for energy security,” said Ed Miliband, climate policy spokesman for the opposition Labor Party. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is relying on wind power, among other things, to make Britain’s energy supply less dependent on fossil fuels such as gas. The head of government also raises concerns the claim that Great Britain should be a world leader in climate protection.
