The electoral turnaround of 28-M in the Balearic and Valencian communities can be seen from afar from the Eixample or the Empordà, but it is not without consequences in the field of the Catalan language, where a market of 7.5 million is not the same than one of almost 14. “We mourn”, I am greeted, sarcastically but concerned, by Joan Gregori, president of the Valencian Music Association, who despite everything repeats out loud that we must “try to avoid ideological prejudices”.
The omen of rarefied times is manifested these days in many conversations. “Every time he sends PPThey don’t call us to go to work.” Yanni Munujos, manager of Maria del Mar Bonet, explains to me bluntly, referring to public theaters such as the Principal in Palma, the one in Valencia or the Auditorium in Castelló. “I foresee a return to the circuit of universities.” A practicable refuge when they come badly given, as Raimon knows well.
What is most disturbing is no longer the return of the PP by itself, but its sum with that asteroid called Vox. An additive that is not guaranteed everywhere and whose weight will end depending on the outcome of 23-J. But it is feared that, if Feijóo accesses Moncloa arm in arm with Abascal, the policy of alliances could become general and, with it, an uncomplexed spirit of revenge. “This danger exists, and it could wreak havoc if Vox demanded Education or Culture, attacking anything that smacks of catalan”, warns me Fanny Tur, who was ‘councillor’ of Balearic Culture between 2017 and 2019.
There are fears of neglect of circuits and cuts in public theaters and auditoriums, an ecosystem that, in the Valencian case, has managed to strengthen after eight years of efforts to order and weave a stable dialogue. “We are not only talking about culture in Catalan, but about culture in general,” says Gregori, who has been director of the Trovam music fair and who values the formalized aid because it corresponds to specific demands in the sector.
In balearesalso in danger (a classic) the affiliation to the Institut Ramon Llull, and the health of the Symphony Orchestra, which will soon finally have its own headquarters. And with a PP + Vox, it is hard to imagine an Any Fuster like the one that allied the Catalan Government with the Valencian and the Balearic Islands.
No government is perfect, but inhibitions in electoral appointments have consequences, And those who now propagate the abstentionist melody in Catalonia, slipping the idea that one government is the same as another, would do well to look a little further, to the south and out to sea.
