Death toll in Mexico from Hurricane Otis rises to 39 – News

The number of deaths due to hurricane Otisa Category 5 storm that unleashed devastation on the Mexican Pacific resort city of Acapulco earlier this week, has increased to 39, according to the latest government figures this Saturday (28).

Otis hit Acapulco with winds of 266 kilometers per hour on Wednesday morning (25), flooding the city, tearing roofs off houses, stores and hotels, submerging vehicles and cutting communications, as well as road and air connections.

The government had previously reported that 27 people had died and that four others were missing because of Otis.

Looting has ravaged Acapulco since the storm left thousands of residents struggling to get food and water.

The revised death toll included 29 men and 10 women, according to an official statement citing figures from the government of Guerrero, the state where Acapulco is located.

He said more than 220,000 homes and 80% of the hospitality sector were affected, and more than 513,000 people were without power.
