The union strongly protested against E-Mart’s first company-wide voluntary retirement plan since its founding in 1993, saying, “We are being treated like defeated soldiers.”

According to the industry on the 26th, the Federation of Korean Trade Unions’ National E-Mart Labor Union issued a statement on this day, saying, “E-Mart employees who helped grow Shinsegae into Korea’s 11th largest company are being treated as losers,” adding, “When department stores had a weak presence, the success of a discount store called E-Mart helped the group He strongly criticized the company, saying, “We are sending a signal to the employees who have nurtured us that we want them to leave now.”

On the 25th, E-Mart posted an application notice within the company stating that all employees with more than 15 years of service and at the manager level or higher will receive voluntary retirement.

E-Mart CEO Han Chae-yang said, “It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to implement voluntary retirement,” adding, “We sincerely ask that you generously understand this measure for a new leap forward.”

E-Mart recorded an operating loss for the first time since its founding last year. Last year, E-Mart’s consolidated operating loss was KRW 46.9 billion, turning into a deficit compared to the previous year (operating profit of KRW 135.7 billion).

The union said, “We failed to properly respond to the point of industry transition and chased the market here and there without leading the way, resulting in a situation similar to ‘a dog chasing a chicken.’” “New CEO Han Chae-yang talked about the essence of the business and eventually talked about the future.” “Without a clear vision, nothing has been shown other than reducing labor costs and touching on finances,” he pointed out.

Lastly, the union said, “(Voluntary retirement) should be carried out for those who really want it and should be a condition that gives hope. Before that, we hope that E-Mart will be managed so that customers, the market, and employees can empathize that it is a company with hope.” “I strongly hope so,” he said.

Meanwhile, E-Mart will hold a regular shareholders’ meeting at the Booyoung Taepyeong Building Convention Hall in Jung-gu, Seoul on the 28th.

At this year’s shareholders’ meeting, an agenda to appoint three people, including CEO Han Chae-yang, as executive directors was submitted, and the agenda to appoint Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin as an executive director was excluded this year as well.
