“They don’t pay me more for dressing well, so I’m going to dress shabby.”

Last month, a young woman appeared on the Chinese social media site Douyin wearing gray checkered pants that appeared to be pajamas, a loose brown dress, a pink top, brown UGG boots, red gloves, and a black mask covering her entire face. She was far from sophisticated and cool.

The woman said in the video that her boss saw her dressed like this and said, “It’s disgusting. “She should be careful about how she dresses for the sake of the company’s image,” she claimed. Then, many netizens supported this woman, saying, “It’s a lot of work and the salary is low, but when does she even care about her clothes?” The video was also shared more than 1.4 million times.

The New York Times reported on the 24th that the culture of deliberately wearing ‘gross outfits’ to work is popular among Chinese young people. It is said that the more people certify that they are wearing clothes that are inappropriate for work, such as fluorescent-colored thick padded jumpers, knee-high socks, and pajamas, the more positive responses they receive.

There is an analysis that young Chinese people are expressing their dissatisfaction with their lives with low wages and frequent overtime through a kind of deliberate ‘self-deprecation’. Young Chinese people, whose opportunities have diminished due to slowing growth, are rejecting a life of relentless effort for success and promotion.

In China, the image of the young generation lying down and doing nothing, exhausted by low growth and unemployment, is called ‘tangping (body flatness)’. In a public opinion poll last month, netizens cited reasons such as ‘I’m too tired to pay attention to my clothes’ and ‘I don’t have enough money to buy new clothes’ as reasons for wearing unsightly clothes to work. Joanna Chen, who works at a beauty salon in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, also revealed a picture of herself wearing a yellow padded jumper, black fur shoes popular among the elderly, light blue socks, and over-sleeves with a picture of a cow. He said, “I was exhausted from the unpredictable lockdowns and quarantines during COVID-19. “She wants a peaceful life rather than promotion and success,” she said, emphasizing that she will stick to comfortable attire in the future. Jessica Jiang (36), who applied for a clothing company in Shanghai, also said, “It takes over an hour just to commute to work. “I don’t have enough time to get dressed properly in the morning,” he said.
