by time news

The European Commission has announced that it recommends the declaration of Ukraine as a candidate country for the European Union, ahead of the summit of EU leaders next week. President of Ukraine Zalansky: “The first step on our path towards membership in the Union, which will bring our victory closer”

Following requests from it, the EU yesterday (Friday) recommended that Ukraine be declared a candidate country to join the union, amid the war in Eastern Europe with Russia.

It is the European Commission that has recommended the accession of Ukraine, thus completing the first official stage in the process of Ukraine’s accession to the Union. The recommendation comes against the backdrop of the war with Russia, which is not interested in bringing Ukraine closer to the West.

“Ukraine has clearly demonstrated its aspirations and determination to meet European values and standards. For this reason, the Commission recommends giving Ukraine the status of a candidate to join,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Lane.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zlansky acknowledged the recommendation, saying: “This is the first step on our path towards EU membership, which will bring our victory closer. I thank Von Der Lane and all Commissioners for the historic decision, and expect EU leaders to approve the proposal next week.”

Alongside Ukraine, there are currently 5 other countries that have already been declared candidates to join the EU: Albania, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey.
