Heavy Rain Causes Chaos in Chennai; Meteorological Department Issues Warning

Several areas of Chennai experienced heavy rain on Sunday evening, causing chaos and disruption for residents and motorists. The Meteorological Department had initially predicted moderate rainfall for the city, but heavy rain fell for approximately half an hour in central areas such as Vadapalani, T. Nagar, Kodambakkam, Ashok Nagar, Nungambakkam, and Alwarpettai.

The downpour led to severe waterlogging on Chennai OMR Road in Taramani, Perungudi, and Chozinganallur, turning the streets into virtual ponds and making it difficult for motorists to navigate through the area.

In related news, the Chennai Meteorological Center has issued a warning that a low-pressure area is likely to form in the South Andaman Sea and adjoining South East Bay of Bengal by tomorrow (27-11-2023). This system is expected to move in the west-northwest direction and strengthen as a low-pressure area in the South East Bay of Bengal by the 29th. As a result, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is forecasted for many places in coastal Tamil Nadu and a couple of places in interior Tamil Nadu districts, Puduwai, and Karaikal areas.

For Chennai specifically, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy for the next 24 hours, with a few parts of the city likely to experience light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning. In the event of heavy rains, the district administration will issue notifications regarding potential holidays for schools and colleges.

The heavy rainfall in Chennai has caused widespread disruption, and residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and take necessary precautions. Stay tuned to News18 Tamil for the latest updates on this developing situation.
