The Verden public prosecutor’s office has called on the fugitive ex-RAF terrorist Burkhard Garweg to give up his cover. In this way, a possible escalation can be avoided.
After the searches in Berlin, the 55-year-old was “really on the run” – without money, accommodation or logistics, said a spokesman for the Verden public prosecutor’s office. Now is a good time to report to the investigating authorities: “Nobody is interested in an escalation.” According to the spokesman, it could have a mitigating effect on the sentence if Garweg turns himself in. Koray Freudenberg, senior public prosecutor in Verden, was optimistic that the manhunt would soon be successful. “We assume that we are close,” he told NDR Lower Saxony on Sunday evening.

A spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) confirmed this morning that another building was searched in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain in connection with the search for Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg. The emergency services found a person in the affected apartment on Corinthstrasse. The LKA said this was not one of the people they were looking for. There was therefore no arrest.

The apartment is being forensically examined
A search had already taken place on Grünberger Straße on Sunday evening, in which, according to the LKA spokeswoman, SEK officers were also involved. No one was found in the apartment there, “consequently there are no arrests,” said the spokeswoman. The apartment on Grünberger Strasse will continue to be examined for forensic purposes. That could still take days.
Construction trailer from Garweg is to be brought to Hanover
On Sunday morning, around 130 emergency services from the LKA, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Berlin police searched a left-wing alternative trailer site on Markgrafendamm in Berlin around two kilometers from the apartment. Ten people were briefly detained to determine their identities. However, the two ex-RAF terrorists Staub and Garweg were not among them. During the operation, a construction trailer was confiscated and transported away for further investigations on Monday night. “The plan is currently to bring this construction trailer to Hanover,” said Philipp Hasse, spokesman for the LKA, to NDR Lower Saxony. The LKA assumes that Garweg used the trailer as accommodation and lived there for a time. As senior public prosecutor Koray Freudenberg told NDR Lower Saxony, the ex-RAF terrorist used the code name “Martin” on the site.
Extensive investigations are ongoing
The LKA Lower Saxony is proceeding very thoroughly in the further investigations. “We will take the time to secure all traces,” Hasse told NDR Lower Saxony. According to Hasse, the information found from the apartments searched is continually evaluated. The Verden public prosecutor’s office said Garweg’s current photos were also discovered in the course of this. The seven recordings that were published a few days after the arrest of ex-RAF terrorist Daniela Klette come from this year.

In addition, the LKA published technically altered images of Garweg on Sunday, in which he can be seen either with a cap, a bald head or glasses. “It cannot be ruled out that the accused Burkhard Garweg has changed his appearance,” said the LKA. Since the fleeing suspected criminals could be armed, the LKA Lower Saxony strongly advises against approaching the wanted people yourself. Instead, investigators are asking for information about the whereabouts of Garweg or dust under the Phone number (0511) 98 73 74 00.
