It is a death that further raises the tension in the war between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli army is ready “for any scenario”, declared Tuesday evening its spokesperson Daniel Hagari, shortly after the announcement of the assassination of the number two of the Palestinian movement Hamas in Beirut.

Without directly mentioning the strike that killed Saleh al-Arouri in Lebanon, blamed by Hamas on Israel, he affirmed during his daily press briefing that the army is “at a high level of preparation for any scenario “.

Hamas leader Ismaïl Haniyeh, for his part, affirmed Tuesday that his movement “will never be defeated” after the death of his number two. “A movement whose leaders and founders are martyred for the dignity of our people and our nation will never be defeated,” Haniyeh said in a televised address. “It is the story of the resistance and the movement which, after the assassination of its leaders, becomes even stronger and more determined,” he added.

An “assassination” which “will not go unpunished” says Hezbollah

“The assassination by the Zionist occupation of the great national leader and valiant fighter Saleh al-Arouri, as well as his brothers among the leaders and cadres of the movement, on Lebanese territory, is a characterized terrorist act, a violation of the sovereignty of Lebanon and an expansion of its aggression against our people and our nation,” he added.

Haniyeh claimed that two leaders of Hamas’s military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, were killed in the strike, Samir Fendi and Azzam al-Aqraa, as well as four other leaders of the movement, Mahmoud Zaki Chahine, Mohammad Bashasha, Mohammad al-Raïs and Ahmad Hammoud.

The powerful pro-Iranian Hezbollah in Lebanon affirmed Tuesday evening that the “assassination” by Israel, in its stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut, of the number two of Palestinian Hamas “would not go unpunished”. “The crime constituted by the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri in the heart of the southern suburbs of Beirut is a serious aggression against Lebanon (…) and will not go unanswered or unpunished,” Hezbollah said in a statement, which for almost three months has been launching daily attacks against Israel from southern Lebanon.
