The Tour of Italy consecrated, Jai Hindley, Sunday, May 29, 20 years to the day after the first Australian pink jersey endorsed by Cadel Evans. Hindley made the colors of the island-continent triumph, a sign of the galloping internationalization of cycling since six countries have appeared on the winners of the Giro, the second major national tour in order of importance, in the last ten editions (Canada, Colombia, Netherlands, Great Britain, Ecuador and now Australia). Hindley, eventual winner ahead of Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz and Spaniard Mikel Landa, avoided the disappointment experienced in October 2020 when he lost the pink jersey on the final day in the Milan time trial. In the festive atmosphere of Verona, among the many tourists, he approached the 17.4 kilometers with a more substantial advance, 1 min 25 sec (compared to… zero seconds in 2020), and therefore sufficient. He only lost 7 seconds in Carapaz over the 17.4 kilometers of the Verona course.
