The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, does not agree with the proposal of the President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen to establish the post of European Commissioner for Defense. He stated this in an interview with the Sud-Ouest newspaper, accusing the head of the EC of exceeding his powers, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“This is deceptive. It makes one think of the army, military personnel and general staffs. But this is not what the European Commission should be doing. Defense is the competence of EU member states,” he said. Borrell believes that this proposal indicates an abuse of power by the head of the EC, who is a member of the European People’s Party.

“Most of the amendments on issues of international politics and security proposed by the European People’s Party are contrary to the EU treaty. The competence of the commission extends to internal security and the military industry,” Borrell recalled. “It is important that no one goes beyond the scope of their powers.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the Munich Security Conference in February, said that the post of European Commissioner for Defense should appear in the next composition of the EC for the first time in the history of the European Union.
