A black man on the street was strangled to death by a passenger on the New York subway, in the United States, after getting involved in a fight inside the car, reported the ABC news network.

The crime took place around 2:30 pm on Monday (1st) at the Broadway-Lafayette station. It is unclear exactly how the confrontation unfolded, but it appears that no weapons were used. Videos circulating on social media show the moment of aggression.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Jordan Neely. The name of the attacker was not released, but it is known that he is 24 years old. He was questioned by detectives and released without charge. Former NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce believes the man acted in self-defense.

According to police, Neely was harassing and threatening other passengers when the 24-year-old intervened and tried to subdue him. A physical struggle ensued, and the man who died lost consciousness. He was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The aggressor’s narrative is being corroborated by the other passengers in the car.

Police say Neely was a repeat offender on the subway, with 44 previous arrests for assault, disorderly conduct and fare evasion. He was actively being sought for questioning for allegedly being involved in an attack in November 2021. In addition to the criminal history, the man who died had mental illnesses.

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander expressed outrage on Twitter and argued that there should be consequences for the man who strangled Neely and that the assailant should not be “justified and applauded”. On social media, netizens said that the crime would not have occurred if the victim had been white.

“Jordan Neely, a mentally challenged black man, was lynched this week on the NYC subway because he was seen as a threat and someone whose life was expendable. His killer — a white male — remains uncharged,” wrote one user. “Jordan Neely’s murder personifies the failings of our society,” said another. “Jordan Neely should be alive,” lamented a third.
