Many times I had thought of hiding my Albanian origin

THE Dimitris Kapouranis gave an interview and talked about his role in “Shipwreck”his origin, but also the racism he has received.

The actor spoke on the show “Night Out” and initially, he mentioned his origin.

“My parents left Albania when I was born and at some point they arrived in Chania. My grandfather took me to Crete. It is very traumatic for a child to be with two people and then be separated from them. These were my carers, my grandparents and suddenly, one day, it’s not and it’s quite traumatic for a child.” explained.

He then spoke about his home country and the racism they have received. “It is generally a trans-Balkan issue. I often have conversations with children from the Balkans who have the same story. And with these children I share a common problem. Here we are Albanians and in Albania, Greeks. We have a dual identity that we didn’t choose, it’s a collective trauma of a generation.” he said characteristically.

He also added: “Maybe I learned to be very alone this time too, I had to fill it with interesting things. This helped me a lot, it made me very creative. I was never bored alone, I was always doing something.”
About the racism that he and other people from Albania have received, he said: “Unfortunately, I experienced racism, but because I was a sensible child and my parents did not give “rights”, we did not experience acute racism. Sometimes I had the feeling that our interpersonal relationships were reaching a point. I think things have changed and I hope they change more. Identity is our weapon, the source of our creation and inspires those opposite us. If you hide who you are and don’t communicate it, then what kind of person or artist are you? This is the source of our creation.”
