Dhaka: Thousands of Rohingya Muslims in refugee camps in Bangladesh observed Genocide Remembrance Day yesterday.

Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims, a minority population, mostly live in Rakhine state in the west. Some of them have been involved in armed protests against the government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar since 2012.

Many people were killed in the attack on Rakhine police stations. Therefore, the angry Myanmar army launched an attack on the Rakhine region in August 2017 with the aim of suppressing the rebels completely. Many houses were set on fire. People were slaughtered en masse.

Fearing genocide by the Myanmar army, more than 7 lakh Rohingya have taken refuge in neighboring Bangladesh. They are languishing in camps with inadequate facilities and flood risk.

Meanwhile, Rohingya Muslims in refugee camps in Bangladesh observed Genocide Memorial Day yesterday. On this occasion, they went on a rally carrying banners and raising slogans. They insisted on ensuring a safe and secure life in their home state of Rakhine. Rohingya Muslims live in many states in India including Delhi.
