Salento continues to celebrate Peter Stein, one of the best known directors in the international arena and among the most innovative of contemporary theater. On his figure last November the Manni publishing house published a biography in the form of a dialogue: a conversation between the German artist and the actor Gianluigi Fogacci, who first came into contact with Stein at the time of Tito Andronico by Shakespeare produced by the Stabile di Genova. The two are the co-authors of the book Another perspective. The life and theater of a Maestro (pp. 176, 16 euros), dialogue through which Stein confesses between private, politics and artistic activity, something he will soon be doing live in Lecce too. The city is preparing, in fact, to host him with Fogacci for the presentation of the volume scheduled for Saturday 22 January, at 11 am, during a meeting organized in the auditorium of the Sigismondo Castromediano Museum. The appointment will be preceded, on Friday 21 January at 7 pm, again in the auditorium of the Castromediano Museum, by a lectio by Stein addressed to the students of the Mediterranean Actor Academy (Ama) founded and directed by Franco Ungaro, a conference during which the artist will meet a group of actors, actresses and directors.

The carreer

The career of Peter Stein, considered one of the greatest “mettle en scène” of the second half of the twentieth century, was marked for fifteen years, starting in 1970, by the direction in West Berlin of the theater collective Berliner Schaubühne where, in opposition to tradition , the German artist adopted a personal naturalistic canon that led him to produce some installations of great impact, including the surrealist farce Early Morning by Edward Bond, the tragedy Kikeriki by Sean O ‘Casey e Peer Gynt di Henrik Ibsen. Then, the transfer to Paris and then from France to Italy, where he still lives in that eden which is the home of San Pancrazio, in Umbria, shared with his wife Maddalena Crippa, the actress who wore the in the role of Medea and who in 2017 also brought the Richard II in which he interpreted the role of the protagonist “en travesti”, reinterpreted in a female key. A show in which Fogacci was also involved. A convinced supporter of a theater that respects the intentions of the author, therefore promoter of a direction that is never to be understood as an artistic creation in a strictly personal interpretative key, Peter Stein has in any case rewritten many classical texts, with the staging of various tragedies of antiquity . And he distinguished himself for the staging of even transgressive shows, such as the Speech on Vietnam by Peter Weiss, in 1968 in Munich, in full student protest, becoming one of the great protagonists of European theater through the exploration of new languages, the distortion of the stage space and the overturning of the temporal concept. For example, in 1980 he reversed the Aeschylus-era setting of Orestes’ trilogy, which lasted from dawn to dusk, and in the Roman theater of Ostia Antica he presented it in a scheduled marathon from dusk until sunrise. The show went around the world. And no less memorable turned out to be the staging of the Three sisters by Chekhov, who after two years of reruns arrived in Moscow. Even titanic was the enterprise of Faust, presented in full version: 18 hours of show and 17 months of reruns, with repetition sold out. Born in Berlin in 1937, Stein still continues to carry with him the memories of a childhood lived in Nazi Germany, from which his father, a fervent Christian, never really distanced himself. Indeed, he contributed, as head of several private arms manufacturing industries, to the war effort of the Third Reich. A commitment for which he was never forgiven by his son, whose rough temperament many have always ascribed to that tragic experience. Previously director of the prose section at the Salzburg Festival, Peter Stein has also signed several lyric productions, some of which are memorable: a Parsifal by Wagner with Claudio Abbado and a Macbeth by Verdi (later taken to the Rome Opera) directed by Riccardo Muti, with whom in past years the director has also shared moments of relaxation in Castel del Monte, in the “buen retiro” of the Molfetta musician.
