A Canadian tourist has died and two others have been injured following shots fired at a hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

The incident took place at the Xcaret hotel on Friday, said Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, head of security for the state of Quintana Roo, in a post on Twitter. The three injured Canadians were taken to hospital where one later succumbed to his injuries, he wrote.
According to the publication of Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, it was a hotel guest who allegedly shot the Canadians. The man in question is wanted by the Mexican authorities, who posted his photo on social networks.
Joined by The Press, Global Affairs Canada said it was “aware of reports that Canadian citizens have been affected by an incident in Mexico.” “Consular officials are contacting local authorities to gather more information and stand ready to provide consular assistance,” wrote Ministry spokeswoman Patricia Skinner.
