Poland is preparing to accept up to a million refugees from Ukraine in case of a Russian attack

Poland is preparing crossings for refugees from Ukraine in case of Russian invasion, Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wonsik said. His ministry provides for the possibility of accepting up to a million people.

“There are several scenarios. Perhaps more positive or not so radical scenarios will come true, but we must be ready for a black scenario, and for some time the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been taking measures so that we are ready for the arrival of this wave of even a million people who, with this most radical element, may appear on our eastern border,” Mr. Wonsik told Polish Radio (quote from UNIAN). In his opinion, the country should be ready for an influx of refugees, “who are fleeing death.”

Mr. Wonsik said that in Poland they want to resolve issues with medical care, accommodation and food for refugees in advance. The Deputy Minister noted that they will be under the protection of Poland. However, Maciej Wonsik urged not to panic. “Putin seems to have such an important relationship with China that he won’t take any decisive steps until after the Olympics,” he added.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on January 28 said that the media create a false impression of the aggravation of the situation with Russia. In his opinion, the level of escalation at the border is no higher than it was before. Mr. Zelensky considers the evacuation of diplomats by a number of countries to be excessive. Russia denies any plans to attack Ukraine.
