The crates are used at large events to collect food that is donated to entities accredited by the program

Inmates at the Professor José Sobreira de Amorim Prison Unit (UP-Sobreira Amorim), who are part of a carpentry and metalwork workshop held at UP, are responsible for producing the crates used in the food collection campaigns of the Ceará Without Hunger Program.

In total, 14 crates produced from wood donations made by the Cearense Supermarket Association (Acesu) were delivered this Tuesday (31), which is one of the signatories of the Pact for a Hunger-Free Ceará. The labor of the inmates who are part of the workshop is the result of qualification promoted by the National Industrial Learning Service (Senai-CE), through the Project for the Implementation of Permanent Productive Workshops in penal establishments (Procap 2019).

The first lady of the State and president of the Ceará Without Hunger Intersectoral Governance Committee, Lia de Freitas, emphasizes that the program to combat food insecurity involves everyone’s participation. “We have several departments involved in Ceará Without Hunger, through policies developed in their departments. In the case of SAP, we had this important support in the construction of these crates, which will serve as food collectors at major events in 2024.”

She highlights the amount of food collected in 2023 during this action, which is considered the third front of the program, along with the Ceará Without Hunger Card and the more than a thousand kitchens in the program. “More than 100 tons have been collected so far. In fact, this Tuesday, we delivered four thousand kilos of food to six entities accredited by the program.”

The head of the Secretariat for Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization, Mauro Albuquerque, defines: “It is gratifying to know that, through the professional training of inmates, we are contributing to this highly relevant program that is Ceará Without Hunger. It is possible to change everyone’s reality and break the cycle of social exclusion through solidarity. Participating in actions like these makes us want to work on resocialization projects, as we are reaping good results.”

Daniel Targino, an inmate at the Professor José Sobreira de Amorim Prison Unit, says he feels happy to participate in the action. “I am very pleased to know that my work will help in some way with this project. Despite being in the prison system, I had the opportunity to become a better person through study and training. I hope to be able to contribute more often to show society that I can be a new person and generate a new perspective on the future for myself.”
