Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Investigative Committee to find out the causes of the accident at the Listvyazhnaya mine in the Kemerovo Region. He announced this at a meeting of the Russian Security Council, which was broadcast by the TV channel “Russia 24”.

“Of course, both the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Investigative Committee have instructions to investigate the causes of this tragedy. <…> It is necessary that nothing like this happens in the future, and this requires systematic work and control over previously made decisions, ”Putin said.

The President also instructed the government and regional authorities to help the victims and the families of the victims. Putin expressed condolences to the families of the killed miners and rescuers and wished the victims a speedy recovery.

There was smoke at the Listvyazhnaya mine yesterday, and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated. A criminal case was initiated on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Art. 217 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of industrial safety requirements for hazardous production facilities, resulting in the death of a person by negligence). The charge was brought against five persons involved in the case: the director of the mine, his first deputy, the head of the section and two inspectors who issued certificates of inspection of the roadway without actually examining it.

The accident killed 51 people, including several rescuers. 239 people came to the surface from the mine, more than 60 sought medical help. In the Kemerovo region from November 26 to 28, mourning for the victims was declared.
