BOLZANO. Is called “jammer”, is a small, apparently harmless device and, unfortunately, few people still know what it is and how dangerous it is. That he was really a “jammer” there due to the increase in thefts on parked cars in the service areas of the A22the Police of Trentino Alto Adige had suspected it for some time. In fact, it is a device capable of disturbing the frequencies emitted by the remote controls of the vehicle locks, which thus remain open.

The turning point

The turning point in the investigations, with simultaneous confirmation of the suspicions, came a few days ago, in the Verona section of theBrenner motorway. In the “Garda Est” service area, to be precise. After yet another theft committed on one of the cars parked near the service station, the Highway operations center of Trento alerted all the patrols on duty at that time on the A22, reporting how suspect car a gray Opel Mokka. Opel which, evidently, was headed north given that, an hour later, in the “Paganella Est” area, north of Trento, the officers of an “unmarked” car from the Trento Motorway Police Subsection noticed, in one of the stalls, a car with its doors open, while a gray Opel Mokka was driving away in a northerly direction.

Having ascertained that yet another theft had been committed and that the presence of the gray car could not be a coincidence, the patrol immediately began chasing the Opel, which was tracked down shortly afterwards in the service area. Laimburg East, a handful of kilometers below Bolzano. There, the two occupants of the Mokka had wasted no time and immediately got to work, trying to clean another car, the third.

The arrest of the two thieves

It was the police who blew up the plans of the carjackers, who immediately intervened to stop the two men. Men who, at the sight of the officers, tried to escape: one started running, trying to reach the nearby apple orchards, but was caught and blocked by one of the officers. The other bandit, however, managed to get into the car and take the motorway, but his escape did not last long. Intercepted by a Bolzano Polstrada patrol, he was forced to exit at the Bolzano Nord A22 toll booth, where he was immediately immobilized.

The complaints and seizures

The two arrested, two Peruvian citizens, were taken to the offices of the Trentino Alto Adige Traffic Police Department, in Largo Palatucci. There, they and the Opel Mokka were searched. An operation that allowed the loot from all three thefts committed in the service areas of the provinces of Verona, Trento and Bolzano to be found and seized. Goods worth approximately 7 thousand euros: There were laptops, bags and backpacks, all returned to their rightful owners on the same day.

The jammer and the portable POS

Also seized was a “jammer” and an even more disturbing object: a portable POS device capable of reading credit and debit cards recently stolen from motorists and charging them the amount of withdrawals or purchases never made, with the credit of those sums in a current account opened in a South American bank. The two Peruvians have been reported: they must answer to charges of complicity in aggravated and continuous theft. One of the two, illegal on the national territory, was also notified of an expulsion decree issued by the police commissioner of Bolzano. Investigations are still underway to clarify the responsibility of the two, coming from the Milan area, also for other thefts committed with the same modus operandi, again on the A22.
