Jan Palach Square in the historic center of the capital will be a meeting place for the entire university community, as well as the public. “The return of academic life to the square and to the main building of the FF UK is a necessary part of the process of coping with a tragic event that changed the life of our entire community in a short moment“, the faculty stated. The Faculty Month initiative aims to create a place for the gradual renewal of the faculty community and a space for expressing respect over four weeks.
The first event will be a procession called the Transmission of the Light, which will take place on Thursday, January 4, two weeks after the tragedy. The procession with candles will leave at 1:00 p.m. from Karolin at the Fruit Market, the historical seat of the university, to Jan Palach Square, where a ceremonial fire will be lit. It will be maintained throughout the month. At the same time, the places of worship from Karolina and the main faculty building, where people brought and still carry hundreds of candles and flowers, will also be transferred. “Candles from places of worship will be used to create a commemorative object for a later memorial site” added the organizers. The organization of the parade was undertaken by representatives of the student associations of Charles University.

Class cancelled
The faculty has already announced that in order to cope with the tragic act more easily, it has canceled classes until the end of the winter semester, i.e. until January 12. The examination period will take place according to the schedule of the academic year, but attestations will be voluntary, as will the passing of state final exams. The tragic event in the university building in the Old Town was the most tragic case of mass shooting in the history of the Czech Republic.
