60% of the city streets do not have a single tree. This is one of the conclusions of the action “The trees of our city”, carried out by members of the “Koina Ioannina” Association, who walked 86 km to locate just 2,951 trees.
The object of the action was the recording of the trees on the sidewalks, to be followed by a mapping of the areas, with the streets being colored green, gray or black depending on the presence or absence of trees.
As part of the action, members of the association walked 312 roads/streets, covering a total of 86,450 meters and the following findings emerged from the recording:
- 60.6% of the roads do not have any trees (189 roads with a total length of 37.9 km.).
- 12.8% of the roads have between 1 and 5 trees (40 roads with a total length of 10.5 km. with a total of 126 trees).
- 26.6% of the roads have more than 5 trees (83 roads with a total length of 37.8 km. with a total of 2,825 trees).
In total, 2,951 trees were recorded on the 312 streets surveyed. This translates to an average of 1 tree per 29.24 meters.

The aim of the action is, through recording the existence and density of trees on the city’s streets, to mobilize the Municipality of Ioannito to plan and implement an integrated program of recording, planting, protection, care and monitoring of the urban greenery. In this context, the findings from our research and a series of proposals/practices of other cities will be delivered to the Municipality of Ioannito, in order to explore the possibilities of living in a healthier and more beautiful environment.
The “Communities of Ioannina” Association concludes, declaring its intention to cooperate with the Municipality and other agencies for the implementation of actions, which will lead to an increase in the density of the urban greenery.
