Kommersant FM columnist Alexander Levi talks about how electric cars are gaining popularity and what trends are being observed.

The merging of the mobile and automotive worlds is inevitable, and in 2023 this process was happening from different directions. One of them was the rapidly growing interest and experience in using electric cars.

During the COVID-19 pandemic alone, their sales grew by more than 90% in both the US and Europe, and for the Chinese market this figure reached 300%, McKinsey & Company experts calculated. In their opinion, by 2035, electric vehicles in the global market will account for 2/3 of all sales of new passenger cars. Even in the very specific conditions of the Russian market, this trend is easy to notice.

Habitual communication with a smartphone is comfortable for the user, and therefore the corresponding interfaces are often successfully integrated into new on-board vehicle systems. It is this part of communication with the user that the struggle will take place in 2024. Among car media systems, a duopoly of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, familiar to the mobile market, has almost emerged.

Search well-known specialized websites for vacancies in the field of electric transport. Among the first, you will see offers from companies that seem to be not primarily about cars: NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Siemens, and so on. In fact, they are now actively transforming the auto business.

According to the resource JDPower.com, the most common technologies in cars by mid-2023 were a navigation system (59%), voice assistant (51%), on-board communication system (39%), as well as technology for updating car software via Wi-Fi or cellular communications (38%). Obviously, the leaders in development in these areas are not classic car brands.

IT giant Huawei took part in the creation of the Aito electric car. Moreover, the vendor shares its software with other brands, such as Avatr, owned by Changan, or Arcfox, part of the BAIC group. Xiaomi has applied for a license to sell its first electric car, the SU7, in China.

Baseus, a well-known manufacturer of accessories for mobile equipment, presented the concept of a charger for electric cars. The automobile brand NIO presented its smartphone – NIO Phone.

The international consortium Car Connectivity has announced a new certification program for digital NFC keys for cars. I am sure that virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence in cars will be the next stage in the merging of environments.
