«This victory is for Marc. He must have seen her from heaven.” With these words, the coach of Girona, Míchel Sánchez, wanted to dedicate, at the beginning of November last year, the triumph against Athletic Club (2-1) to Marc Riera and Castellà. With only 20 yearsthe young water polo player from Banyol and unconditional supporter of Girona had just died after fighting for many months against a sarcoma d’Ewing, a cancer that mostly affects young people and that has a very high mortality rate. The disappearance of Riera, only 20 years old, left his team mates very touched CN bathrooms, who have decided to keep his memory alive by creating a very special tournament on July 15. The Marc Riera and Castellà Memorial it will not be a conventional water polo competition in the club’s swimming pool but rather a pond-polo tournament, taking advantage of the fact that, in the summer, the club always sets up the water polo field outside in the pond. “Having this tournament as a memorial is the best way to pay tribute to Marc, who was passionate about sports and water polo. Until the end of everything, he never failed to train, had exams or whatever”, he explains Pau Prieto, coordinator and coach of the water polo section.
