The commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal is going to sit in a meeting today Thursday (March 21) to determine the schedule of the first phase of local government upazila parishad elections. The meeting is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. at the election building in Agargaon of the capital.

After the meeting, the schedule of the first phase of Upazila Parishad elections may be announced.

Meanwhile, the revised Upazila Parishad Election Rules-2013 and Upazila Parishad (Election Conduct) Rules-2016 have been issued in the form of notification after vetting by the Law Ministry. It was published on the BG Press website last Tuesday night.

Election Commission (EC) Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said yesterday on Wednesday, there is a commission meeting on Thursday. He also said that Upazila Parishad (Election Conduct) Rules and Upazila Parishad Election Rules have been gazetted. Ashok Kumar Debnath said that the signature of 250 voters in the rules has been removed and it will be easier for the candidates to vote in the upazila. When asked whether to make any changes in the Representation of the People Order (RPO) to exclude the support of 1 percent of the voters for independent candidates in the parliamentary elections, he said that the Commission will decide on this.

Jhenaidah-1 by-election may also be scheduled Election Commission sources said, the by-election in Jhenaidah-1 vacant seat has also been kept on the agenda of today’s meeting of the commission. The seat fell vacant due to the death of Abdul Hai, the Member of Parliament for this constituency on March 16.
