Registration for Technical Training in Disasters is now open. The program aims to enable biologists, veterinarians and volunteers to take direct action in rescuing wild fauna and providing assistance to animals that are victims of environmental disasters.

The training will be provided in the EAD (Distance Learning) modality and will be available to participants across the country. Registration and completion of activities will take place through the CRMV-MS platform, providing convenience according to the time availability and schedule of those interested.

Classes are recorded and can be accessed according to the student’s time availability and schedule. The program consists of introductions from the partners involved in the initiative and 15 content modules.

Each module is accompanied by a learning check. Students have up to 90 days to complete the course and those with sufficient performance receive a (digital) certificate of completion at the end.

Pantanal, the main focus of the training, is a biome that has suffered from severe droughts and forest fires. Technical Training in Disasters is a crucial tool for protecting not only wildlife, but also this unique ecosystem.

In 2020, the Pantanal biome faced one of the worst environmental disasters in more than a century with devastating fires. As a result of this disaster, almost 17 million animals died, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Due to this recent history, the president of IHP (Instituto Homem Pantaneiro), Ângelo Rabelo, points out the need to have professionals prepared for crises. “We saw an unprecedented tragedy in the Pantanal, with a terrible loss of fauna. Having trained professionals to act in times of disaster like the one we witnessed represents a more effective response so we can fight for lives.”

Among the modules of Technical Training in Disasters are: Introduction to disaster, introduction to technical rescue of large animals, work ethics in disasters, victim triage and levels of emergency care, forest fire – fire characteristics, biosafety in disaster, survival and forest rescue, GIS (Geographical Information System), strategic standard organization, monitoring techniques and tools, basic nutritional support, companion animal containment techniques, wild animal containment techniques, environmental legislation and licenses and journalistic coverage.

“We are committed to expanding disaster response capacity, strengthening the network of experts and volunteers prepared to face the challenges of protecting wildlife and the environment. At this critical moment, with extreme events and fires in the North and Central West, our initiative gains even greater relevance”, added Renata Nitta, Head of Campaigns at World Animal Protection.

The program is carried out through a partnership between World Animal Protection, IHP, UCDB (Dom Bosco Catholic University) and CRMV-MS (Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of Mato Grosso do Sul).
