Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali has given his opinion in favor of merging the weak commercial. He said, it is better to merge the weak bank with the strong bank, so it can happen.
He said this to reporters after a meeting with Jayendu Dey, the resident representative of the IMF in Bangladesh, and Lily Nichols, the Canadian High Commissioner assigned to Bangladesh, on Thursday (February 8).
When asked about the progress of implementation of Bangladesh Bank’s announcement regarding the merger of weak banks, the finance minister said that it is better to merge weak banks with strong banks. The idea is there. Both of them cannot work at all, so it is better to merge them. Can be done with those who are strong. In advanced economies, consolidation often takes place.
He said that in countries where there is a free economy, there is always integration. Better to merge with a good bank than not working at all. This is the idea. It is definitely possible. However, we have not yet received any proposal for the merger of any bank in Bangladesh. Let the proposal come, then we will see. It has to be given time.
