Last year, the proportion of elementary, middle, and high school students in the obese group (overweight/obesity) decreased slightly, but 3 out of 10 students were still found to be overweight or obese.

The Ministry of Education and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced the results of the analysis of the ‘2023 Student Health Examination Sample Statistics’ and the ‘Adolescent Health Behavior Survey’ on the 28th. This is an analysis of the physical development status of 87,182 students from 1,009 schools nationwide selected as a sample last year and the health checkup results of first and fourth grades of elementary school, first year of middle school, and first year of high school.

Last year, the average height of the highest grade by school level was 153.3 cm for 6th grade boys and 153.2 for girls, which was 0.4 cm and 0.3 cm shorter, respectively, compared to 2022.

The average height of third-year middle school students is 1.3 cm for boys and 0.3 cm for girls, reaching 170.9 cm and 160.9 cm, respectively.

Male third-year high school students decreased by 0.1 cm to 174.4 cm, and female students decreased by 0.2 cm to 161.7 cm.

The average weight of sixth-grade male students decreased by 1 kg to 50.6 kg. The average weight of female students in the same grade also decreased by 0.2 kg to 47 kg.

The average weight of third-year middle school male students was 64.6 kg, up 1.7 kg from the previous year, and the average weight of female students was 55.1 kg, down 0.5 kg from the previous year.

Male third-year high school students weighed 72.7 kg, an increase of 0.9 kg, and female students weighed 58.2 kg, an increase of 0.7 kg.

The proportion of overweight students among all students was 11.2%, a decrease of 0.8 percentage points (p) from the previous year, and the proportion of obese students was 18.4%, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points. As a result, the proportion of overweight and obese students was calculated to be 29.6%.

The proportion of obese students in town and township areas was 5.7%p higher than the proportion of obese students in urban areas.

As a result of additional blood tests conducted on students diagnosed as overweight and obese starting in 2021, the percentage of students with total cholesterol levels above 7.9%, triglyceride (TG) levels above 2.7% points, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels above 7.4% points. While each decreased, the proportion of students with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels or higher increased by 3.9% points.

◇Drinking rate for 1st to 3rd graders of middle school decreased by 2% points… Increased consumption of sweet beverages

Last year, the ‘current smoking rate’ of middle school to high school seniors was 5.6% for male students and 2.7% for female students, a 0.6% point decrease for male students compared to the previous year. Current smoking rate is the percentage of people who smoked at least 1 day within 30 days.

The ‘current drinking rate’ of middle school to high school seniors was 13% for male students and 9% for female students, a decrease of 2% points and 1.9% points, respectively, from the previous year. Current drinking rate is the percentage of people who have had one or more drinks in the past 30 days.

The ‘hazardous drinking rate’, which is the percentage of students who drank alcohol more than once within 30 days, was 41.3% for male students and 50.1% for female students. This is an increase of 0.9%p and 3.5%p from the previous year.

The rate of practicing physical activity for 60 minutes a day or more 5 days a week was 24.6% for male students and 9.2% for female students, an increase for both male and female students compared to the previous year.

However, the rate of skipping breakfast more than five days a week was 39.7% for male students and 42.6% for female students last year, an increase of 2.3%p and 1.9%p, respectively, compared to the previous year.

The rate of consuming fast food three or more times a week was 29.2% for male students, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from the previous year, and 24.4% for female students, a decrease of 1.1 percentage points from the previous year.

The proportion of sweet drinks, including all sweet drinks such as carbonated, energy, ion, fruit juice, and coffee drinks, 3 or more times a week, was 69.4% for male students and 60.0% for female students, an increase of 2.0 percentage points each compared to the previous year. It increased by 0.4%p.

Mental health indicators have improved somewhat. The rate of experiencing depression was 21.4% for male students and 30.9% for female students, a decrease of 2.8%p and 2.6%p, respectively, compared to the previous year. In particular, the decline was large, with high school male students decreasing by 3.9% points and female students decreasing by 3.4% points.

Weekday smartphone usage time was 266 minutes for boys and 294 minutes for girls, an increase of 8 minutes for boys compared to the previous year, while a decrease of 6 minutes for girls. The experience rate of smartphone overdependence, which is being surveyed every three years, was 24% for male students and 32.3% for female students, an increase of 2.8%p for male students and 2.3%p for female students compared to 2020.
