In recent months, the number of accidents in Nagapattinam district has been on the rise, and it has been linked to cows roaming on the roads. The negligence of the Nagai municipal administration has been pointed out as a contributing factor to this growing issue.

Cows have been spotted wandering in important areas such as the New Bus Stand, Old Bus Stand, Fort Vasal Road, Public Office Road, Nagai-Nagur National Highway, and the District Collector’s Office. This has led to frequent traffic jams and increased the risk of accidents as the cows lie down in the middle of the road, wander across, and even stop to fight with each other.

The situation is particularly dangerous at night, as the cows have been known to sleep on the road, posing a significant risk to motorists, especially those traveling on two-wheelers.

A recent tragic incident involving a cow resulted in the death of Sabarirajan, a 55-year-old resident of Nagai Mela Kottivasal area. While walking near a petrol station in the Melakottai Wasal area, a cow passing by attempted to hit him. Sabarirajan stumbled and fell on the road, where he was tragically caught in the wheel of a government bus passing by, causing fatal injuries.

The Nagai city police are currently investigating the matter, and the incident was captured on surveillance camera, causing a sensation in the area.

This alarming trend has raised concerns among residents and has prompted calls for urgent action from the authorities to address the issue of cows roaming on the roads in Nagapattinam district. It is essential for the municipal administration and law enforcement agencies to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians in the area.
